Community Talks In Herne Bay – History: Renaissance Tyrants with Dr David Rundle, Senior Lecturer in Latin and Manuscript Studies. Centre for Medieval and Early Modern Studies at the University of Kent. In the classic formulation of Italian Renaissance, it was a time of high culture and low morals. One of its features was the considered number of rulers who were, or wanted to act tyrannically, expressing their overactive individualism by imposing their will on the people. These could be found in Florence with the Medici in Naples, the Aragonese kings, and even in Rome with the papacy under the likes of Alexander VI and Julius II. It is sometimes suggested that the writer who best summed up how to be a tyrant was Niccolo Machiavelli, but this is to misrepresent his purpose. We will look at how the Italian states were ruled and how writers like Machiavelli thought they should be ruled. For details and to book a place ring Tel: 07919978883
