The Ramsgate Wartime Tunnels

26th May
The Ramsgate Wartime Tunnels
7.30pm. ‘The Ramsgate Wartime Tunnels’. Colin Matheson. The Ramsgate tunnels are the only purpose built civilian air raid shelter tunnels in the country.  The three and a quarter mile tunnels were built in the chalk under the town in 1939 and saved thousands of lives in the Second World War. Following a devastating air raid on the town in August 1940, nearly a thousand people actually lived in the associated railway tunnel for the duration of the war. After the war the tunnels became the (unofficial) playground for the youth of Ramsgate and are now Ramsgate’s most visited attraction. The meeting will take place at Otford Village Memorial Hall, Otford High Street, Otford TN14 5PQ. Admission £5 (cash only, please). Doors open 7pm. Refreshments will be available during the break.
