The Colonel of Tamarkan, Philip Toosey and the Bridge on the River Kwai by Julie Summers

The 1940s Society

November Meeting, Friday 29th November 2024 7.30pm. ‘The Colonel of Tamarkan, Philip Toosey and the Bridge on the River Kwai’ by Julie Summers. Alec Guinness won an Oscar for his portrayal of Colonel Nicholson in ‘The Bridge on the River Kwai’ but, as Julie Summers reveals, his role bore scant resemblance to historical fact. The real officer in charge of the malnourished, diseased and brutalised slave-labour force that built the bridge was her grandfather Philip Toosey.  In Julie’s talk she draws upon those who knew and fought alongside him to create a remarkable tribute to a forgotten British hero. The meeting will take place at Otford Village Memorial Hall, Otford High Street, Otford TN14 5PQ. Admission £5 (cash only, please). Doors open 7pm. Refreshments will be available during the break. Free car parking next to Hall.
