Medway’s Ice Age Finds
Dr Letty Ingrey, the lead archaeologist in the team that, last year in Strood, uncovered the oldest prehistoric stone tools ever found in the UK will give a rare public talk about the finds at Newington History Group’s meeting in the village hall, ME9 7JJ, on Thursday, May 23 (7.30pm).
The tools are thought to date back 300,000 years to the Ice Age and include an extraordinary ‘giant’ hand axe. They change what we know about our distant ancestors.
More than 800 prehistoric artefacts were found preserved deep in the Ice Age sediments on the Medway Valley hillside and Dr Ingrey, who has said little publicly about the discoveries, will explain why they are so remarkable.
The event is open to all (£4 at the door). NHG meets monthly on the 4th Thursday.
