Literature: The Life And Work Of Lord Byron

Literature: The Life And Work Of Lord Byron
8th July 2.15pm to 4.15pm Herne Bay
with Dr Susan Civale, Reader in Romanticism at Canterbury Christ Church University. George Gordon, Lord Byron (1788-1824) – Regency gentleman, political radical, playboy and poet – is one of the most scandalous figures in literary history and possibly the first celebrity in our modern sense of the word. He is well known for his high-profile love affairs (with men and women); his financial entanglements; his involvement with the Greek Independence movement and his tragic death in Missolonghi at the age of 36. However, what has made his life most interesting of all is arguably not what he did but how he wrote about it This talk will introduce Lord Byron and examine some of his most famous poetry. In looking at the tragic, comic and erotic dimensions of his writing, we will develop a greater understanding of the original ‘Byronic hero’ and will discuss how his legacy may still be felt today.
