History: The Renaissance
Community Talks in Herne bay (2.15pm-4.15pm) history: the renaissance with Dr David Ruddle, Senior Lecturer in Latin and Manuscript Studies. Centre for Medieval and Early Modern Studies at the University of Kent. The Renaissance is a term applied to an intellectual and artistic movement that began in Italy during the fourteenth century, flourishing in Florence and then culminating in the sixteenth century. In visual arts such as architecture and sculpture, the term is generally taken to imply a deliberate imitation of classical patterns or a conscious return to classical standards. In paintings, the Renaissance public came to expect a high degree of naturalism or fidelity to nature and a search for the perfect form which typifies Renaissance painting.
