A Sea Symphony

Our choir’s 2025 summer concert, will be performed on Saturday 28th June at the Stag theatre, as contribution to the Sevenoaks Summer Festival, given jointly by the Sevenoaks Philharmonic Choir and the Sevenoaks Symphony Orchestra.
The Orchestra will open the concert with Bax’s Tintagel Overture which was inspired by walks along the rugged coast of north Cornwall in the summer of 1917. Bax wrote that “the intention is simply to offer a tonal impression of the castle-crowned cliff of Tintagel, and more especially of the long distances of the Atlantic as seen from the cliffs on a sunny but not windless day”.
The remainder of the concert is dedicated to the music of Ralph Vaughan Williams and features both the sublime The Lark Ascending and his first large-scale choral work – A Sea Symphony.
Whilst The Lark Ascending presents the hauntingly beautiful theme against a musical description of the bucolic English countryside, A Sea Symphony describes musically the full range of sea states with the Orchestra Choir and Baritone and Soprano soloists delivering a symphonic treatment of the words of Walt Whitman.
