Arts Society Sevenoaks

STILL HERE AFTER 50 GLORIOUS YEARS – THE ARTS SOCIETY SEVENOAKS

The Arts Society started in the 1960’s from one small Society, a group of friends, to 365 Societies now with 72.00 members.  The first societies came together to form ‘The National Association of Decorative and Fine Art Societies’ — NADFAS.   It changed its name to something simpler The Arts Society.

Sevenoaks NADFAS was started 50 years  and as The  Arts Society Sevenoaks we are celebrating

50 Glorious Years!.

An important part of being a member of The Arts Society is that we hold each month lectures on the arts in its widest sense, led by excellent, specialist speakers.    We also hold study days when we look at arts subjects in more depth, and we visit galleries, exhibitions and places of interest.

Another important part of being a member is that you are part of a Society that works with and for its community.  We volunteer for heritage and conservation projects locally.   A recent project was that we sorted, catalogued and computerized the archives of the ancient Sevenoaks Vine Cricket Club.  We are about to start working on an archaeology project at the old Archbishops Palace at Otford.    We work with and for local children and young people.    We have awarded bursaries to students, taken a group to a gallery workshop, bought musical instruments for school music departments, funded artists going in to schools, funded a teacher training day in art and craft skills.  Our last project was to donate 50 bags of art and craft materials to a local food bank at Christmas for families with young children.     We hope to repeat this at the start of the long school summer holiday.   We collaborated with other Sevenoaks societies to fund a loan box scheme at our local museum for children to work with museum artefacts.

We hope to launch this in the spring.   We are working on our third Trail of Discovery for children when visiting our local ancient village churches.  We shall continue to fund similar projects.

Our members have the opportunity to volunteer on projects if they have time and wish to do so, but the

main, most important reason most of our members join The Arts Society Sevenoaks  is for our outstanding monthly lectures.      Come and join us, in this our golden, celebratory year.   You are assured of a very warm welcome.

We meet at Wathamstow Senior School, Hollybush Lane, Sevenoaks at 8.00 p.m.   Drinks served

from 7.30 p.m.    Plenty of free parking.     (small donation  requested)    COME AND JOIN US.

WE SHALL BE VERY PLEASED TO SEE YOU.     We have several visits to exhibitions planned for the

coming months.
