The name of the orchestra originates from the old barn that once stood next to Abbey Court in Sandling, the home  of Dr Ponder and his family. He founded the orchestra in 1927 and despite the odd  occasion when the orchestra looked like it might have to fold we have managed to keep it going even during the Covid pandemic when we met online and rehearsed to a You can see the original  barn ( which was demolished many years back) on our Facebook group cover photo. Search Old Barn Orchestral Society on the groups section or visit  the about is section of our website oldbarnos.com where you will find a little more information  about our history, conductor, leader and concerts. Even though the orchestra rehearses in Maidstone several members ( present and past)  have come from Rainham and many of the Friends of the orchestra, whose support is invaluable,  come from our local area. We often perform concerts in Medway and indeed like the previous one in the summer,  our autumn concert will take place in St Matthew’s Community Centre on Saturday 10th December. We welcome any lapsed players, especially to bolster our string sections. So dust off that violin or cello in the loft and get in touch! We’re a friendly bunch with an enthusiastic and knowledgeable young conductor who is encouraging ( and forgiving!) having been an extra player and member since he was 17!
