Community Talks In Herne Bay -Natural History: Secret Seaweed with Ian Tittley, Scientific Associate at the National History Museum. The National History Museum holds over 80 million specimens of animals, plants, fossils and minerals. Forming part of its plant collection are 600,000 specimens of seaweed from all over the world. Examples will be shown of the earliest museum specimens and other important collections including specimens gathered in Kent by other botanists. Seaweeds are marine algae and differ from ‘sea’ plants such as sea grass, sea carrot, sea beet, and do not produce flowers and set seed. Every day one of us uses something that comes from seaweed! This will be explored further. From the earliest herbalist and apothecaries who came to Kent and collected seaweed for medicinal use, to their exploitation today for pharmaceutical, cosmetic, culinary, agricultural and industrial use. Seaweed is vital to life on our planet and it has been of importance to mankind for millennia. For details and to book a place ring Tel: 07919978883
