One man who was perfectly positioned to combine charm with creative salesmanship, convincing tight-fisted titans of Wall Street (Frick, Morgan, Mellon etc.) that art was more important than money – art – and, “when you pay high for the priceless, you’re getting it cheap”. Without Duveen, there is no Frick; and, without Duveen both the Metropolitan Museum in New York and The National Gallery of Art in DC would struggle, or even fail, to be considered world-class today.
