Philosophy: Six Great Philosophers with WEA Lecturer David Derrington from Cornwall. People have been discussing philosophical questions since the birth of civilization. We have records of ideas about matters such as how the world came to be that go back to before 3000 BC in Egypt, Babylon, Assyria and Persia. Philosophy as we know it today developed in ancient Greece in the 6th century BC with the pre-Socratics. The philosophy following them was shaped by Socrates (469-399BC) and covered a wide range of topics including the nature of reality. Looking at key ideas in six very different thinkers – Heraclitus, Lao Tzu, Spinoza, Hume, Marx and Camus – David, who has been teaching philosophy for over 22 years, will open up new directions within your established ways of thinking or help in finding a personal starting point for getting deeper into philosophy.
