Creating Britain

Creating Britain
9th June 2.15pm-4.15pm
History: Creating Britain – Division, Civil War and Union 1603-1707 with Ken Fincham, Emeritus Professor in Early Modern History at the University of Kent. In 1603 those old enemies, England and Scotland, formed a dynastic Union as James VI of Scotland took the English throne as James I. Over the next century there were real tensions and problems between England, Scotland and Ireland, including the British Civil Wars of 1639-1651. Successive rulers (including Oliver Cromwell) tried to work out how the multiple countries of Britain could co-operate rather than quarrel. The Glorious Revolution of 1688 complicated the picture with two branches of the Stuart Family claiming the throne. This talk ends by examining the Union of 1707 with the creation of an Anglo-Scottish Parliament, which went some way to addressing these problems.
