Community Talks In Herne Bay
2.15pm-4.15pm Literature: The Life And Works Of Oscar Wilde With Sarah Anthony Ma, Lecturer in Literature for the WEA and The University of Kent. On 18 February 1895, the Marquess of Queensberry left his calling card at the Albemarle Club in London, inscribed: “For Oscar Wilde, posing somdomite” {sic}. Wilde encouraged by his lover Lord Alfred Douglas, and against the advice of his friends, initiated a private prosecution against Queensbury for libel. Clearly, the note amounted to a public accusation that Wilde had committed the crime of sodomy. On 25 May, Wilde was convicted of gross indecency and sentenced to two years hard labour. In this talk, Sarah Anthony will look at the life and works of this Irish poet, playwright and novelist, his fascinating persona and the controversial trials which led to his downfall. The afternoon will include clips from his plays and novels and plenty of opportunity for questions and discussion. For details and to book a place ring Tel: 07919978883
