ARCHAEOLOGY: SCIENTIFIC MARVELS IN ANTIQUITY with Dr Dunstan Lowe,
2.15pm-4.15pm Senior Lecturer in Latin Literature at the University of Kent. The Greeks invented geometry, astronomy and clocks. And the Romans invented concrete, barrel vaults and monumental domes, which all changed the world and laid the foundations for modern technological advances. Yet many experimental inventions and theories either seemed impractical or were forgotten for centuries and left very little trace outside obscure technical writings. Dr Lowe will review a selection of scientific dreams from classical times, especially the centuries between Alexander the Great and the eight of the Roman Empire. These include gears and automata, steam power, mechanical calculations, magnetic levitation, astrology and magic talismans. For details and to book a place please ring Tel:07919978883
