The Sittingbourne & Kemsley Light Railway
The Sittingbourne & Kemsley Light Railway, aka Sittingbourne’s Steam Railway, operates the original steam locomotives on the former paper mill railway between Sittingbourne Viaduct (in Sittingbourne Retail Park) and Kemsley Down (in Kemsley Paper Mill). Trains run every Sunday and Bank Holiday from Easter/April to the end of September and Wednesdays in August, also Santa Specials in December. All of our staff are volunteers and they carry out all the tasks from day-to-day maintenance and operations to major overhauls and rebuilds of the locomotives, carriages and wagons. We also have extensive grounds to keep, such as the picnic area, wildlife garden and railway lineside. There are a number of backroom roles that also need to be covered to enable the charity to operate safely and efficiently. What does volunteering give you? It\’s not about the trains but it\’s about making people happy and giving them great memories. Some people have never travelled on a train before or seen a working steam locomotive, this is a whole new experience that they will cherish. Seeing the smiles and receiving the thanks of strangers for making their day is a fantastic feeling and working with the public is a rewarding experience. Why not come along and give it a go? Volunteers must be members of the Railway and complete a short safety induction, no experience is necessary and we will provide training where necessary. Visit our website for more information or email info@sklr.net to get involved.
